The Financial Picture in Miami

Miami has a diverse and thriving economy, particularly in the International Trade, Finance, and Tourism industries. The city's vibrant lifestyle, combined with a high cost of living, creates a unique environment where residents may seek financial products like life insurance to secure their assets and plan for a comfortable retirement.

Why it matters

Why Miami Families Plan Ahead

In Miami, the median home is worth about $570,000 and the median household earns about $59,000 a year. For most families the mortgage is the biggest bill, so a good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

About 15.9% of residents are 65 or older. If you are close to retirement, an annuity can turn savings into steady income, and a final expense policy can keep funeral costs off your children.

Florida does not tax wages, so more of each paycheck can go toward protection and savings. Cash value in an IUL can add another tax-advantaged source of retirement income.

Life Insurance Rules in Florida

Life insurance and annuities sold in Florida are regulated by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in Florida and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the Florida Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association steps in for Florida residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $300,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $100,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $250,000 in annuity value

Annuity limit shown is the deferred-annuity net cash surrender limit; annuities already paying out (annuity in benefit) are covered up to $300,000.

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
