Learn more →Why Georgia Families Plan Ahead
In Atlanta, the median home is worth about $440,000 and the median household earns about $86,000 a year. For most families the mortgage is the biggest bill, so a good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.
About 12.3% of residents are 65 or older. If you are close to retirement, an annuity can turn savings into steady income, and a final expense policy can keep funeral costs off your children.
Georgia taxes income, which makes tax-advantaged savings worth a look. Cash value in an IUL grows tax-deferred and can usually be reached through policy loans in retirement.

Life Insurance Rules in Georgia
Life insurance and annuities sold in Georgia are regulated by the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in Georgia and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.
If a life insurance company ever fails, the Georgia Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association steps in for Georgia residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:
- $300,000 in life insurance death benefits
- $100,000 in life insurance cash value
- $250,000 in annuity value
Annuity limit shown is the net cash surrender and withdrawal limit; the present value of annuity benefits is covered up to $300,000.
That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
