Why it matters

Why Indiana Families Plan Ahead

In Indianapolis, the median home is worth about $225,000 and the median household earns about $66,000 a year. For most families the mortgage is the biggest bill, so a good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

About 13.1% of residents are 65 or older. If you are close to retirement, an annuity can turn savings into steady income, and a final expense policy can keep funeral costs off your children.

Indiana taxes income, which makes tax-advantaged savings worth a look. Cash value in an IUL grows tax-deferred and can usually be reached through policy loans in retirement.

Life Insurance Rules in Indiana

Life insurance and annuities sold in Indiana are regulated by the Indiana Department of Insurance. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in Indiana and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the Indiana Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association steps in for Indiana residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $300,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $100,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $250,000 in annuity value

Annuity limit applies to insolvencies after January 1, 2013; earlier insolvencies used $100,000. Total benefits per person across life and annuity coverage are also capped at $300,000.

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
