The Financial Picture in California

California is the most populous state in the country, with an economy built on technology, entertainment, agriculture, trade and tourism. High housing costs in much of the state make the size of a family’s life insurance policy, and how retirement savings are taxed, especially important.

Why it matters

Why California Families Plan Ahead

For most families in California, the mortgage and the paycheck are what life insurance has to protect. A good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

California taxes income, which makes tax-advantaged savings worth a look. Cash value in an IUL grows tax-deferred and can usually be reached through policy loans in retirement.

Life Insurance Rules in California

Life insurance and annuities sold in California are regulated by the California Department of Insurance. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in California and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the California Life & Health Insurance Guarantee Association steps in for California residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $300,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $100,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $250,000 in annuity value

California pays 80% of the benefit or value, up to these maximums, not 100% up to the maximum.

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
