Why it matters

Why New York Families Plan Ahead

For most families in New York City, the mortgage and the paycheck are what life insurance has to protect. A good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

New York taxes income, which makes tax-advantaged savings worth a look. Cash value in an IUL grows tax-deferred and can usually be reached through policy loans in retirement.

Life Insurance Rules in New York

Life insurance and annuities sold in New York are regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in New York and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the Life & Health Insurance Company Guaranty Corporation of New York steps in for New York residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $500,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $500,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $500,000 in annuity value

New York applies one combined $500,000 limit per life across life death benefits, life cash surrender values, health claims and annuities.

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
