The Financial Picture in Houston

Houston's economy is a dynamic engine fueled by the energy, healthcare, and aerospace industries, attracting a diverse and growing population. The city's affordability and high purchasing power create a unique environment where residents can build their lives and plan for a secure financial future, making insurance and retirement planning particularly relevant.

Why it matters

Why Texas Families Plan Ahead

In Houston, the median home is worth about $278,000 and the median household earns about $65,000 a year. For most families the mortgage is the biggest bill, so a good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

About 12.3% of residents are 65 or older. If you are close to retirement, an annuity can turn savings into steady income, and a final expense policy can keep funeral costs off your children.

Texas does not tax wages, so more of each paycheck can go toward protection and savings. Cash value in an IUL can add another tax-advantaged source of retirement income.

Life Insurance Rules in Texas

Life insurance and annuities sold in Texas are regulated by the Texas Department of Insurance. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in Texas and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the Texas Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association steps in for Texas residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $300,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $100,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $250,000 in annuity value

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
