Why it matters

Why Washington Families Plan Ahead

In Seattle, the median home is worth about $837,000 and the median household earns about $124,000 a year. For most families the mortgage is the biggest bill, so a good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

About 13% of residents are 65 or older. If you are close to retirement, an annuity can turn savings into steady income, and a final expense policy can keep funeral costs off your children.

Washington does not tax wages, so more of each paycheck can go toward protection and savings. Cash value in an IUL can add another tax-advantaged source of retirement income.

Life Insurance Rules in Washington

Life insurance and annuities sold in Washington are regulated by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in Washington and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the Washington Life & Disability Insurance Guaranty Association steps in for Washington residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $500,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $500,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $500,000 in annuity value

Washington applies $500,000 per person to each type of covered policy.

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
