Why it matters

Why Minnesota Families Plan Ahead

In Minneapolis, the median home is worth about $319,000 and the median household earns about $80,000 a year. For most families the mortgage is the biggest bill, so a good starting point is term coverage that would pay off the house and replace several years of income if a paycheck stopped.

About 10.8% of residents are 65 or older. If you are close to retirement, an annuity can turn savings into steady income, and a final expense policy can keep funeral costs off your children.

Minnesota taxes income, which makes tax-advantaged savings worth a look. Cash value in an IUL grows tax-deferred and can usually be reached through policy loans in retirement.

Life Insurance Rules in Minnesota

Life insurance and annuities sold in Minnesota are regulated by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Before you buy, you can check that an agent is licensed in Minnesota and get help with a complaint on its consumer help page.

If a life insurance company ever fails, the Minnesota Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association steps in for Minnesota residents, up to these limits per person, per insurance company:

  • $500,000 in life insurance death benefits
  • $130,000 in life insurance cash value
  • $250,000 in annuity value

Annuity limit shown is the fixed annuity net cash surrender value; structured settlement annuities are covered up to $410,000 in present value per annuitant. Minnesota will not pay more than $500,000 in total for any one person.

That safety net is not the same as FDIC insurance, and amounts above the limits depend on the insurer. It is one reason we compare carriers by financial strength rating, and why people with very large amounts sometimes spread coverage across more than one insurer.
